Hi Eric,
It is really great that you are doing your research. We have learned the hard way, through 4 tough years of home renovations, that one must really research both the contractors one uses and the products that they will install.
Firstly, Matt is a great guy who is very good at what he does. I am not sure if you are familiar with how he runs his company, but customer service is of paramount importance to him and his team. They will get it right and guarantee it without hassle, which is a far cry from the other plumbers we have used in doing our renovations (3 before Matt and had problems with all of them). We have been overcharged, had pipes put in wrong, had one company charge for duct work that they never finished etc. I would recommend Matt without reservation because he is honest, knowledgeable and takes pride in his work. Oh, and they are very neat too, which is an added bonus! I will never use anyone else and trust him and his team enough to let them in our home even when we are not here.
Now, in terms of the system 2000. Don't hesitate for a minute in installing it. In terms of the extra expense, I think that it is worth it for the versatility of the system, the efficiency and how clean burning it is. We too had a giant, energy guzzler that belched out toxic waste every chance it got - we have an asthmatic daughter and I wanted to get the best, cleanest, safest system on the market. We were also planning to add on to our house at some point and wanted a system that would accommodate that. This system can run a variety of heating types (radiant, forced air, water heaters etc) so no matter how we decide to heat any new additions, this will do the job. Anyway, we did all the research and decided that the System 2000 was the way to go and then got Matt do do it for us. We also got a bid from XYZ Co, but they didn't want to relocate the burner and I felt like they may have been cutting corners in their plan. Matt's plan made more sense and tackled our other issues as well (duct work, AC, chimney), I just wanted it done right and not to have to go back and re-do something because corners were cut by an installer that didn't have the ability to look at the whole picture.
As far as the installation...our original oil burner was under our house in a crawl space and was hard to get to. Matt had a hard job here and it went off without a hitch. They moved the burner out of the crawl space and into a small basement room that was kind of a workshop. In doing that, they had to reconfigure duct work and actually make a new chimney for us (we have a metal chimney on the side of the house where it really can't be seen). They re-did our AC too and everything has been working great.
The only issue that we had so far was that a valve got gunked up because of deposits in our water and Matt had to come on an emergency call to fix it...no big deal and Matt marked it on his calendar so he knows approximately when it happened and he put a plan in place to do per-emptive service so that it doesn't happen again.
We have definitely cut down on our energy costs too, although this was secondary in importance to us (first was how clean it burns) - we just tried to figure out how much we are saving and it seems to vary but my husband thinks that overall it is about %30.
Hope this helps - let me know if you want to come take a look at the burner and the chimney and we can set up a time.
Best-Jeannie
