Up in the sky working relentlessly away is the sun beaming down onto our planet providing much needed heat and light. But what are we doing with all that solar energy?

Depending on what country you are in during night and winter seasons the sun is insufficient or is not there at all. This is when we burn the fossil fuels such as coal and oil. Of course the main fuel we use is wood, wood is renewable but the burning of the wood, oil and coal is highly toxic to our environment and one of the main causes of the planets increase in temperature. The effects of global warming has forced scientists to come up with a alternative eco-friendly concept hence the idea of Putnam solar heat panels. These panels are great at storing and providing heat during winter and they cost nothing to run.

The panels them selves are a very simple concept. They are simply thin flat boxes with a black metal plate at the back with a transparent front. Inside the box is tubing filled with a liquid such as refrigerant or even water or air. The panel is placed on the roof of your house facing the sun. The metal plate inside the box heats up and is used for storage for the evening. The impressive thing is these things can heat water up to near boiling point even on a average day! You can use it to heat your water or as a heater and its free.

Hopefully with solutions like this there will be a decreased dependency on burning wood. The trees just can't grow fast enough. I remember travelling in Nepal and being appalled by the devastation of deforesting to heat there homes. If people can start to utilize devices such as this and other helpful devices such as solar hot water heating - it can make a difference. You may maintain the thought of "what can I do?" but if everyone did one little thing to help there environment the impact would be great even though it may seem insignificant compared to the size of the problem.
